All reasons people received scholarships. What'll yours be?

It’s that time of year. Time to get those applications in for scholarships to help fund your university education. University is typically the second largest investment you will make in your life (a home being #1). Applying for scholarships to help fund your education is not only smart, it makes cents.

Source 1: Look to the universities to which you applied. Many universities’ entrance scholarships are automatically awarded based on your admission average—but always check, and there may be many more scholarships or bursaries at those universities within your grasp! You just have to APPLY.

For instance, at the University of Guelph-Humber, a first-year student with a 90%+ admission average would receive a $5,000 Renewable Entrance Scholarship for their first year at UofGH. But a student who applied to and received a Founders’ Academic Merit Scholarship would receive their $5,000 Renewable Entrance Scholarship AND $5,000 for the first-year award of the Founders’ Scholarship. Over four years, this student could receive $34,000 in scholarship money from these two scholarships alone.

Learn more about our Founders’ Academic Merit Scholarship worth $20,000 (due February 28) and our $2,000 Registrar’s Need-Based Bursary (due April 15). Our Renewable Entrance Scholarships are automatically awarded to successful applicants with 75%+.

Source 2: Go beyond universities as your scholarship source. Search the internet for scholarships and award programs. You’ll be surprised what’s out there—good marks aren’t the only qualifier. Start with scholarshipscanada.com. Look for scholarships based on your interests, favourite topics or future career goals. Many employers offer scholarships to employees or students of employees. We know a student who received a scholarship based on their love for grilled cheese: that same student later started the Grilled Cheese club here at UofGH. Your options are open.

Don’t be discouraged by the time needed to complete the application or write that essay. That one hour you spend could earn you $500 to $5,000. Time well spent.

Now get started.
