Didn't Get Your Preferred Program? Here's What To Do

Some plans don’t work out. Don’t let it get you down... here’s how to get back on your feet!

Rejection happens to everyone, and although it may be discouraging, take it as a learning opportunity and a chance to grow. While your Plan A may not have worked out, now is the perfect time to set up and pursue a Plan B.

See your guidance counsellor about alternate options, which may include taking an extra semester or year of high school to improve your grades. This is an excellent opportunity to raise your overall application quality as well as to additional classes of interest.

If you are hoping to get into a math program, the University of Waterloo admits Math students for the term starting in January, which means you don’t have to wait a full year! As well, an Admissions Information Service (AIS) starts in June and allows you to search for university programs that are still accepting applications.

The University of Waterloo admits students applying from college, if that's an option for you. Alternatively, you may consider a part-time or full-time job for a year and using that time to learn more about what you are passionate about before applying again. If possible, you could seek a job or volunteer position that is related to the program that you are hoping to get into, helping you to gain additional skills in your field.

The most important thing is to not lose hope! Applying to university can be very competitive and as long as you find a way to adapt and reevaluate your path according to the circumstances and keep moving forward, you will eventually reach your end goal.
