Comprehensive Schools

The 2018 comprehensive rankings maintain a fairly stable line up from last year’s rankings. There was little change in the top five from last year, with the top school, Simon Fraser University remaining in first place. The University of Victoria and the University of Waterloo swapped spots with Guelph and Carleton staying put to round out the top five.

  1. 1. Simon Fraser University
SFU has a reputation for producing impactful research. Creating shock waves in the real world isn’t the only thing this university can do; social innovation is another. Simon Fraser is ranked fist in student awards, library expenses and acquisition well as second in student services, faculty awards and overall reputation.
  2. 2. University of Victoria
The 2016 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings has UVIC ranked among the top 250 universities worldwide; THE has also ranked UVIC in their 2016 January list of 200 most international universities in spot 175. This university is ranked first in medical/science grants, second in student awards and scholarships and bursaries as well as third in faculty awards, citations, total research dollars and library acquisitions.
  3. 3. University of Waterloo
Waterloo has consistently been ranked among the top comprehensive universities for 10 years straight and it’s not hard to see why: this year Waterloo is first in reputation, faculty awards, citations and social sciences and humanities grants. The United Nations have partnered with them to allow any would-be pilots an introductory course for free.
  4. 4. University of Guelph
Prosthetics are expensive, however a U of G biomedical engineering student has perfected a durable plastic/nylon printable prosthetic hand, which will be shared with technicians in a remote medical clinic in southern India. As well, Guelph has made a major breakthrough in terms of spinal cord regeneration research: some students were able to identify the specific stem cell that allows geckos’ tails to grow back if severed. Guelph is the first in total research dollars, second in student satisfaction and third in overall reputation.
  5. 5. Carleton University
Located in the nation’s capital, Carleton inspires entrepreneurs and innovations in teaching, research, and learning. Ottawa has government institutions, libraries, media, the arts, the outdoors, and professional sports. Carleton is fourth in student wards, student satisfaction and medical/science grants.
