Description:

Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting health and illness in communities and populations. Epidemiologic research methods form the cornerstone of public health and epidemiological researchers seek to improve health and reduce risk factors for disease and illness. Our research training program in epidemiology aims to provide doctoral students with the skills required to conceptualize, design, conduct, analyze and interpret observational (descriptive and analytic) and experimental studies that are used to identify risk, prognostic factors and course of communicable and non-communicable diseases; and to evaluate strategies designed to promote health, prevent disease and provide health care.

    At minimum, applicants require a master's (thesis or course-based) degree, or its academic equivalent in a relevant field from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta, with a grade point average of at least 3.4 on the 4-point scale over the last 60 credits of full-time study (or equivalent).
    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 580] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 7] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7]
    Application Notes : Applicants may also take a PTE with a minimum score of 59 in order to prove their English proficiency.

    Transcripts are also required. Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated high-level research aptitude and competence in the application of their discipline to research. The evidence for aptitude and competence includes previous engagement with in-depth public health research/practice, research scholarships or fellowships, and/or a research publication track record.
