| This one-year Master’s programme will provide a comprehensive introduction to the literature and culture of the Renaissance. Examining a wide range of texts from the period from 1550-1700, students will combine traditional and theoretical approaches to drama, poetry and prose texts, including Shakespeare, Spenser, Milton and Marlowe, alongside writers like Aemilia Lanyer, Barnabe Rich, Katherine Philips and many others. The emphasis throughout will be upon detailed close reading in context, placing these extraordinarily accomplished and fascinating texts in their historical, political and cultural contexts, and upon the material aspects of textual production in the early modern period (manuscript, print, paper, handwriting). Students will be encouraged throughout to develop their own research interests, and will be equipped with a range of key skills. UCD (and Dublin) is well resourced for the study of the Renaissance – libraries such as Trinity College and Marsh’s are nearby and have strong early modern and manuscript holdings, and we have close relationships with Trinity, Queen’s University Belfast, and NUI Galway. In addition, all the modules on the programme will make central use of databases such as Early English Books Online. At the same time as giving a thorough grounding in canonical texts of the period, this programme draws on the latest research in the field, exploring in particular, early modern Ireland, and gender and sexuality. |

Applicants for the MA are expected to hold a BA degree or equivalent, with a distinguished record of undergraduate achievement. You can apply in advance of completing your BA for admission the following September, but you must be able to complete your application by sending in the full transcript of your BA results by the end of July. If you have already completed your BA and wish to apply for the MA, you can apply at any time in the year prior to admission the following September, up to the advertised closing date. |
