Industrial Ecology (MEng)

In the Industrial Ecology program, we emphasize research-intensive, sustainability-focused and interdisciplinary work.

You’ll graduate with a deeper understanding of the complexities of sustainable development, including the influences of economic, political and regulatory factors. In your final term, you’ll undertake a graduate project in industrial ecology.

This is a project-based program; there is no thesis.

Outcomes

Graduates with an MEng in Industrial Ecology will be able to:

  • assemble and compute energy and material flows in an industrial society over a range of scales
  • frame, develop and apply systems approaches for determining the environmental and economic impacts of infrastructure
  • plan and analyze systems for material reuse and recycling
  • demonstrate understanding of the scientific basis of environmental impacts of human activities
  • explain how the methods and tools of industrial ecology can be applied in business, economic and public policy contexts

Most students in this program hold an undergraduate degree in engineering. However, students with backgrounds in science, geography, environmental studies, business or economics may also be eligible. Strong math and calculus skills are required.

As part of your application, you must also submit:

  • a letter of intent
  • curriculum vitae
  • two assessment reports from academic or professional references
  • post-secondary transcripts
