Where there is a will, there is way
From University of Saskatchewan
Going to University is a big step for any student. If that step involves going to a different country as well, then the situation becomes even more challenging. At this fragile moment, even a bit of help and a slight nudge in the right direction is very helpful. It is this help that most students will be forever grateful for.
When I first came to the University of Saskatchewan, it originally felt like I was in a void, knowing nothing and no one. But whenever I had a question to ask, there was always someone to answer it. The people I met here were kind and friendly; to them, I was not an outsider but a lonely child. They helped me as much as they could. The International Students Office Buddy Program matched me with a current U of S student who was a great support to me. Orientation was a great way to find out about how the university functions as well as a great way to meet new people.
I am from Rajasthan, India, and to me Saskatchewan could not have been any more different than home. To come to the prairies from what is almost a desert was quite an interesting change. It is not just the climate or topography, but the culture and customs are also quite different from what I was used to. Yet it is not that hard to adapt if you have a will to learn. Wherever you might come from, you will easily find people from your country here. This makes it very easy as you have someone to show you the ropes.
A great place to meet people from all over the world is the International Student Office. It's a good idea to mix with everyone and not just people from "back home"; because you are not back home. You might as well use the opportunity to meet new people from completely different backgrounds. Events held by the International Student Office, such as the Communication Café, are great ways to meet people from all over the world. Another fun and exciting way to get to know other cultures was International Week. Hosted by the International Students Office, International Week has many speakers and events as well as a food fair. You just never know where you are going to meet interesting people. You can't really pick and choose your friends; friendship just happens, but be sure not to lose them.
Even if it is a new country, one has to remember that school is still just school. There is no reason to be afraid or worried. The way in which we register for classes here at the U of S is online. It's a good idea to use that opportunity and register before you come to Canada, since classes have a tendency to fill up. It's not fun when you realize that all the classes you want to take are full. If you need help, it is easy to ask friends. Don't ever hesitate to go ahead and talk to academic advisors, I can say from personal experience, they are pretty helpful.
I am not sure if what I have written is of any help to anyone. If it does help even one person, it was well worth the effort. Coming to the University of Saskatchewan was a big decision but it is something that I will always be happy about. Within only a few months, this place has become home, and I am glad that I came here.
