Live and learn a new language at UofT School of Continuing Studies

Choosing a language school can be difficult. Since there are so many schools out there, you should consider many things. Studying in another country is the experience of a lifetime! Do a little homework and take time to do research.

Is the school a member of the Canadian Language Council? Is the school recognized by TESL Canada? Does the school have an excellent reputation? The University of Toronto's English Language Program at the School of Continuing Studies is a member of both the Canada Language Council and TESL Canada and has been offering English language courses for over 40 years.

Are instructors highly-qualified and experienced? The ELP's instructors' education, experience, dedication and enthusiasm are important factors in creating the ELP's superior quality. All our instructors are trained professionals with advanced degrees and post-graduate English as a Second Language certificates. Based on student evaluations, they consistently earn high ratings for their teaching.

What is the right program for you? If you plan to study at an English-speaking university, for example, you'll want a course that helps you prepare the language skills required for academic study. The Academic English course, offered by ELP, is ideal for students who want to prepare for degree studies. Students who complete Level 60/Advanced with a final grade of 'B' or higher meet the language facility requirements for degree studies at the UofT.

What other support and activities are offered? ELP offers plenty of academic support beyond the classroom from weekly workshops (eg. grammar, vocabulary) to one-on-one conferencing with instructors. The Student Services office at ELP ensures that students' stay in Toronto will be comfortable and fun. Organizing social and cultural activities and assisting students with visa (and study permit) issues, housing concerns, applying to university or college are just a few of the services offered.

The best way to learn a language is to 'live' it. When in Canada, you'll want to experience language inside and outside of the classroom. An excellent school offers many different ways to learn and practice English outside the classroom. ELP offers a wide range of year-round activities and trips, from sporting and entertainment events to three-day camping trips.

There are also many clubs at ELP that will put your English into practice. As members of the Volunteer Club, students volunteer in school organized group events and fundraisers, as well as seek individual opportunities at organizations throughout Toronto. Club members earn a certificate upon completing 20 hours of volunteering.

The T-Pals Club pairs ELP students with current UofT students as a way to practice English in a one-on-one situation. The WoW ("World of Words") magazine is published four times a year and includes stories, features, and opinions of the ELP students. As writers for WoW, students have a great opportunity to practice English writing and work as part of an international team.
