The University of British Columbia (UBC) welcomes international students from all over the globe.  With the drive to become Canada’s best university, UBC continues to build links between different parts of the world by advancing and sharing interest in international research and global-exchange studies.  For many international students, post-secondary applications into Canadian institutions can be a difficult and confusing process.  Despite excellent qualifications, international students are often denied acceptance into programs due to unmet English language requirements.

In welcoming international students to study in Canada, UBC is proud to offer conditional acceptance into our degree programs.  The UBC English Language Institute (ELI) helps students obtain the English levels required for academic studies and assists them in making smooth transitions into their desired degree program at UBC.

Intensive English Program
The Intensive English Program (IEP) offered by UBC ELI allows for conditional admission to students who do not yet meet UBC’s English language admission standards.  The level 600 Certificate of the IEP serves as proof of English language ability for undergraduate admission to UBC.  The 16 week IEP sessions give students sufficient time to develop their English skills, provide a dynamic cultural experience, and align with the UBC academic calendar to eliminate semester turn-around waiting time.

IEP is a full-time English language program conducted in 16-week sessions beginning in January, May and September. You can come for just one session or stay for longer – our multi-level program ensures that you will have new challenges and new courses to select from as your English improves. When you successfully complete three courses at one level you will earn a UBC Certificate in English Language for that level.

Conditional Admission

Undergraduate Applicants
For academically outstanding students who are interested in applying for Conditional Admission into an undergraduate degree, application is limited to international students who are already attending an ELI program.

Graduate Application
For Conditional Admission status in graduate studies, students apply directly to the degree program of their choice.  To review the minimum English proficiency scores needed by different graduate departments for conditional admission please refer to this document.  Upon successful completion of the department’s required English level at the ELI, students may enter directly into their degree.
