Preparation for Success: Orientation Week at TRU
International students at Thompson Rivers University arrive one week prior to the beginning of the semester. Their orientation includes the pragmatics as well as the socio-cultural features that prepare them for their studies and integration.
Our TRU International Student Support teams (Admissions, Academic Advising, Student Advisors, and Student Volunteers) facilitate an array of activities where students are personally assisted with their arrival, accommodation, course registration, administrative protocols, banking, and additional practical settlement matters. Workshops on intercultural communications, language, and academic success features provide students are also introduced.
Our senior international students play a key role in assisting the new students. The week is concluded with a city tour and a formal Welcome Luncheon hosted by the President and Vice Chancellor of TRU. During this luncheon, students are also greeted by the Mayor of Kamloops, government officials and TRU administrators, faculty, and staff.
The TRU and Kamloops community has an opportunity to recognize the importance of having students from around the world on our campus and in our community. It is much for students to absorb in a week so follow-up workshops, ongoing support, a handbook, as well as on-line information are always available to students throughout their stay.
