Your Virtual Passport to Success
By: Candace Brown
For many international students choosing to study at Humber College, the emphasis is on academic learning with practical experience. With over 2700 international students each year there must be more to Humber.
At the core of the International Centre, the importance is on Student Life. Student success is the number one priority which we believe cannot be achieved without a well-balanced lifestyle. Student life means not only academic success, but also the Canadian experiences our students achieve.
Prior to arriving, students receive access to our “Virtual Passport to Success”, where they are given an idea of what to expect, what to do at the airport, and things to do in Canada.
The school year kicks off with both International Orientation and Meet and Greet, drawing over 400 students. These action-packed events include games, prizes, and a chance for students to get to know the staff at the International Centre. At these events, students are provided with the tools to help make their stay at Humber both memorable and successful.
In addition, the International Centre runs an International Student Buddy program. This program gives faculty and seasoned international students the opportunity to be a part of a “Welcome Team”. This team engages new students through informal, personalized, and social interactions.
A variety of off-campus events are also offered throughout the semester. Students visit Niagara Falls, Snow Valley and Ottawa/Montreal, experience a city top view from the CN tower, and ride the Behemoth at Canada’s Wonderland.
Each semester for the International Centre is not complete without the International Dinner. Students are invited to a semi-formal dinner event with recognition awards, dancing and games.
