The Western Experience: Canada's Best Destination for Student Involvement

University is not just about learning from textbooks and studying for exams. It’s about finding opportunities to grow and learn both inside and outside the classroom. International students at Western are part of a vibrant learning community -- one that provides both strong academic programs and countless opportunities for involvement in extracurricular activities.

Getting involved at Western can be as simple as attending events, volunteering, joining a club or sports team, or taking an active role in student government. The International and Exchange Student Centre (IESC) offers international students many ways to get involved, including social events, trips, workshops, and weekly opportunities to meet new people at the Global Café. IESC also offers an International Peer Connection Program and an English Conversation Program.

For those interested in volunteering, opportunities can be found through IESC, the Volunteers In Progress Program and Western Volunteer Program. By sharing their talents, volunteers learn more about Canadian culture while gaining valuable work experience. Students can also volunteer off campus through the Western Serves and Alternative Spring Break Programs. Each year, hundreds of Western students participate in these programs and travel to places like New Orleans, Dominican Republic, Peru, and Costa Rica, or help local community organizations.

The University Student’s Council clubs system is another great way for Western students to get involved. In addition to approximately 50 cultural clubs, there are many more special interest clubs reflecting the diversity of our student population. Whether you are interested in photography, politics, tennis, or chess-- there is a club here for you!
