Gain Canadian Work Experience with York University
Fourth-year student Haris Mahmood is now on a 16-month paid internship with IBM Canada. As a Web Application Developer, Haris is in charge of the coding, design and maintenance of parts of the IBM website as well as developing e-commerce websites and applications for phones and tablets. “I really like that I’m doing something with my education,” says Haris, an international student from Saudi Arabia. At York, Haris was able to take Design courses (a passion of his) while pursuing a degree in Computer Science, something that helped him land his internship. “I always enjoyed Design but Computer Science seemed more practical,” he says, “but working at IBM and studying at York, allowed me to combine both.”
Everyone knows that an education is vital to finding a good career and that gaining work experience as part of that education is equally as important. York offers many opportunities to gain valuable work experience while in Canada.
York International offers international students many opportunities to participate in the International Student Employment Program (IESP) throughout the year. This program places international students in a variety of positions within the University administration. All the positions are on-campus and pay students between $10.25 and $15 per hour. Weekly hours range from 5 to 20 per week during the fall and winter terms, and up to 35 hours per week during the summer term.
International students are also welcome to apply for a position with York’s other on-campus employment programs, CLAY, RAY, Work/Study and YES. These programs include positions with the University’s colleges, administration, researchers and student engagement offices. Positions with these on-campus programs allow students to gain valuable work experience in their chosen fields around their class schedules. For more information on these on-campus employment programs, visit the Student Financial Services website.
York also helps students find internships with top Canadian companies. The York University Career Centre offers six different internship programs for students in a variety of academic programs, including – but not limited to – business, digital media, engineering, health and physics. Internships are optional, paid positions and range from four month to sixteen month terms. For more information on the available internships, visit the Career Centre website.
York works hard to ensure its students’ success. Our work experience programs are only one of many examples of the ways in which University supports the continued success of its students.
