What to Expect and How to Connect in Canada
An amazing 83% percent of international students at Centennial College did not apply to study in any other country! If you’re like our student body, you’re already set on studying in Canada and are ready to prepare for your new experience.
What to Expect in Canada
There is a lot to get excited about! However, there may also be significant differences between the education system you are used to and studying at a college in Toronto, Canada.
“The major difference from my study at home is the emphasis on hands on experience, and the lab equipment – it’s awesome! We train on the real stuff from industry here, so when you go to work in the field you use the same technology.” Vasily Gurin explains, comparing studying Mechanical Engineering at the National Aerospace University in Ukraine and his Post-Graduate training at Centennial College.
“In Canada, the student teacher relationship is more like a friendship than in Asia. Your teacher will expect you to raise your hand and participate in class. You may be nervous at first, but once you do it enough, you'll feel more comfortable.” says Kay Hwang of what to expect when studying in Canada.
Making Connections in Canada
“Making friends in Canada from my home country, from Canada and from many other countries was a huge benefit to me – academically and socially. Now, I’m one of the many students and grads that newcomers can connect with online before moving to Toronto” says Anamaría Rodríguez Sánchez, co-host of Centennial’s recent Live Video Chat for Hispanic students.
Wherever you are in the world, you can start building your Canadian social network online. The Centennial College International Centre Facebook page, Vietnamese Students at Centennial College Facebook page, Centennial College В Контакте page, and our upcoming virtual College Fairs all welcome you to start making connections within the Centennial College community before you move to Canada.
Orientation to Student Life
“Orientation is where we welcome new students to Canada and Centennial – we are so enthusiastic and cheerful that it takes away their nervousness. We connect new students to all of the on-campus support groups like Peer Mentoring, Student Clubs and Sports Teams, so no one feels lost,” says Hirra Iftikhar, member of the Centennial International Student Welcome Squad.
“Our message to new students is loud and clear: congratulations on moving to Canada, we’re here to help with the next steps!” assures Hirra.
