St. James-Assiniboia School DivisionThe St. James-Assiniboia School Division presents an exciting opportunity for elementary, middle and senior school students to broaden their education and life experience in Canada. Our International Student Program presents an opportunity to learn in Winnipeg, a vibrant, exciting city and to receive the best in education and university preparation. Graduates of our Division are well prepared for an education in Canadian, U.S. and international universities.

Here is a story from Thais, an international student from Brazil who participated in the International Student Program:

My name is Thaís Bernardino Rosa, and I’m 17 years old and I’m from Brazil. Before coming to St. James-Assiniboia, I didn’t know what to expect, wondering if I was going to make friends or if I would adapt to the cold weather. However as time passed by, it was time for me to come to Winnipeg and by far it is the most incredible experience of my life.

I always thought that learning English was the best thing that an exchange program can offer, but in reality it has so much more things to offer that it was only possible to realize when I left my comfort zone back home and came to a different country. Here, I made new friends (Canadians and from other countries as well), learned about the Canadian culture, how to survive and enjoy the cold, how to be open to people, so they can know me better and vice-versa, and most importantly, I became so much more independent that I ever could be if I was in Brazil right now, because leaving my family and friends behind, and coming to a totally new place, new school and to live with a family that I’ve never met, made me grew up so fast in this year that I’ve been here.
Even though part of me is excited to go back to Brazil, I’m sad to leave, because my host family (that I don’t even consider as a “host” family anymore, but actually my Canadian family) and I created such a great bond, and I will miss them and my friends like crazy once I go back! So, the only advice that I have to give is: enjoy every day of your exchange, because it is a lifetime experience and it changes us in such a good way that no one can imagine!
