Student Life in FDU - Vancouver

These days, North America will be the most popular study-abroad destination in the world. However, even within this continent, there are many differences between Canada and U.S in terms of student life. Yes, Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU)-Vancouver is an American university, but what students experience in FDU-Vancouver is unique from our sister campuses in New Jersey.

Diversity
Every student who arrives in FDU-Vancouver is pleasantly surprised by such diversity in student body. Ryan Barth-Dwyer, FDU student from New Jersey, wrote in his article about study abroad experience in Vancouver that “With students from just about every country of the world studying here, my perspective on both life and a way of living has changed. Here at FDU-Vancouver you learn more than what is taught just inside the classroom. As a student, you are able to expand your knowledge on the world around you without leaving the city of Vancouver.”

Competition
FDU highly encourages students to participate in competition ranging from sports to academics. FDU teams compete in Vancouver Dragon boat race and soccer league on regular basis. Moreover, last month, FDU Business students finished in 3rd place out of 22 teams from across Canada in UBC’s Reveal Business Simulation Competition. This kind of competition allows students to experience what is out there and open doors to more opportunities.

Global Citizenship
FDU-Vancouver students truly embrace the spirit of Global Citizenship through participation in various international events. Last year, three of FDU-Vancouver students, Luis Cerón, Thy Truong and Ira Saini, participated in 6th Biennial Education without Borders in city of Dubai, in the UAE. At the event, students had opportunities to talk to international industry leaders and scholars who are involved in developing innovative solutions for global challenges. In addition, FDU’s Global Scholars program allows our students to attend regular conferences with different U.N ambassadors in current global issues. In 2013 March, FDU-Vancouver team will be in New York City for Model United Nations, representing Saint Kitts and Nevis.

West Coast Fun!
Did I give you the impression that FDU is all about being serious and academic? Don’t worry about a thing! Being located in Vancouver, the 5th Best City in the World (1st in North America!), gives FDU students a huge range of activities and events to enjoy. Students can take advantage of beautiful Vancouver summer with activities like surfing, dragon boating, biking, soccer, and so on. Also, as a host of 2010 Winter Olympics, Vancouver is surrounded by world-class ski slopes if you are avid skier or snowboarder. In addition, FDU-Vancouver is literally steps away from BC place and Rogers Arena for all types of games. Last year, FDU students went to watch Vancouver Whitecaps game all together.
