Five Tips for Academic Success: Achieving the Highest Grade Possible

1. Go to class prepared to learn. Perhaps the most important rule of all because you cannot learn unless you are present in class. Be sure to attend every class and pay attention. Professors always base exams and assignments on course content and lectures, and many professors take attendance which counts toward your final grade. Some professors even reward students who regularly attend class by providing them with valuable information pertaining to assignments, tests, and exams.
2. Read the course syllabuses and assignments clearly and thoroughly. At the beginning of each new course, professors will give you a syllabus which includes the deadlines of assignments, the reading schedule, and expectations in the course. Some professors even include a marking scheme or rubric in the syllabus showing students exactly how they are being graded. Be sure to read this carefully and follow the professor’s guidelines – it may just help you secure a better grade.
3. Utilise the University’s resources. At Algoma University, we have The Learning Centre, the Writing Lab, and the Math Lab, which can help you achieve academic success. Be sure to take full advantage of each – you can receive writing and editing help, formulaic help, study help, or sit in on workshops to help you alleviate exam stress. 4. Schedule meetings with professors to discuss assignments and class lectures. Our professors have an open door policy and are always willing to meet with students to discuss classroom lectures and assignments. Professors will often go over assignments with students, and clarify any problems or questions they may have. Meeting with professors can give you an added sense of confidence in your work and may also encourage you to participate in classroom discussions – both of which can help you get that better grade!
5. Read the professor’s feedback and comments thoroughly. Some professors will leave feedback on assignments and essays in regards to style, formatting, citation, and content. Be sure to pay close attention to the feedback given and address these issues in future assignments. This can help you secure a higher grade, and demonstrate to the professor your willingness to learn and your progress throughout the course.
