College-bound? There are “Soo” many choices!
By Krista Pearson, Registrar, Sault College
So, you want to study in Canada? It’s quite a daunting exercise to decide where to go and what to study. Some guides may suggest that you first figure out where you want to live and what you want to study, but I have another approach. I want to put YOU into the selection criteria. I want you to start by answering these questions:
What kind of life do you want to have? What is your reason for studying abroad?
What are your values and what’s important to you? Do you value health and family or a vibrant nightlife?
Do you hope to improve your language skills?
Is it your hope to work in Canada after graduation?
Are you seeking an environment that promotes wellness and community or bright lights & big city?
Having the answers to these questions will guide your decisions and help you focus your efforts.
Sault College: Think about it
If you’re interested in a smaller college with warm welcomes and your academic dreams are of nursing, engineering, business, technology, post-grad studies, community services or media, film and design, Sault College may be the right choice for you.
Sault College, located in the city of Sault Ste Marie (aka “The Soo”), is at the hub of the Great Lakes and on the Canada-US border. Nestled amidst the spectacular Canadian Shield with an abundance of fresh water, forests and four seasons of adventure, Sault College offers international students so much more than an excellent education.
“Soo” much to do!
Each season offers adventurous, nearby outdoor experiences from skiing, sledding, hiking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, camping, and running. If you prefer being indoors, there are plenty of shops and malls, movie theatres, restaurants, and pubs to keep you entertained. And, since it’s a smaller city, it’s easy to get around whether walking, biking, driving or taking advantage of the City Bus Student Pass.
Sault Ste Marie boasts of four multinational companies (Essar Steel, GP Flakeboard, Tenaris, and Brookfield) and the federal and provincial forestry government headquarters. With a natural specialization on resource-based industries, there are opportunities for students to gain experience and exposure with these and other companies. Whether through co-operative education, part-time work or internship experiences, Sault College provides students with the necessary job development skills to build your resume so you can take advantage of post-graduate full-time work in Canada.
As a mostly English-speaking city, language skills will rapidly develop for second-language learners. Offering a ‘typical’ Canadian city experience, Sault Ste Marie offers a true English immersion environment.
