Parkland College Offers Immersive Experience
Community Atmosphere Attractive for International Students
Studying in a foreign land is an enriching experience, but it can be overwhelming. There’s something comforting about studying at a place where your instructors and classmates know you by name.
That’s typical for students at Parkland College, one of seven regional colleges providing university programs and skills training in Saskatchewan. With small class sizes and a diverse, tight-knit community feel, students are able to settle in and make the most of their post-secondary pursuits.
Parkland College’s International program initiative began in the 2009-10 academic year with a student from Chile. It has grown since then, hosting well over 100 students from all corners of the world, including India, the United States, Fiji, Jamaica, Belize, and Bosnia, and many other countries. Business, health, and trades programs are popular among these students. The College’s offerings will expand in 2015 to include new post-graduate certificates.
“We are dedicated to giving our international students the best educational experience possible,” said Lisa Cadieux de Larios, International Coordinator at Parkland College. “But these people are also studying here to learn about our local customs and what it means to be Canadian. Their experience is well-rounded through their interaction with other students, instructors, and the entire community.”
International students must meet the same program standards as any other student, along with an English requirement. But once they begin their studies, they find the intimate surroundings can lead to a greater understanding of course material and better grades.
