Cultural and History Meet on the Doorstep of Canada
“Canada has never been a melting pot; more like a tossed salad” Arnold Edinborough
Tucked away on the east coast of Canada is Halifax, Nova Scotia a thriving city that feels more like a small town. Geographically situated on the edge of North America, Halifax has welcomed millions of immigrants through its ports over the past 150 years. The cultural diversity Nova Scotia exudes has been nurtured by the artists, craftspeople and designers who make a living here. This city is also home to universities and colleges that welcome new students every year. Education in Nova Scotia is as diverse as the people and the landscape.
NSCAD University is a unique visual arts institution that has been in existence almost as long as Canada has been a country. Established in 1887 by local philanthropists the project was initiated by Anna Leonowens, author, educator and feminist. Anna Leonowens was a woman who never stopped travelling and exploring new cultures. At NSCAD University we still believe in the importance of international connectedness. As the first degree granting visual arts institution in Canada, NSCAD University remains connected to its alumni who work internationally and who cherish their experience here. The campus holds a rich history of those who came before. The stories and legends are still shared and then inspire those who are here fostering their curiosity. At NSCAD University you become part of a large international network of doers and dreamers. Our goal is to nurture and incubate the next generation of rule breakers, dreamers, makers, innovators and the exceptional.
