With school coming to an end in the weeks ahead, now is a great time to think about finding a job for the summer break. Be it a co-op position, an internship, or a regular job, there are many types of summer jobs. In many cases, your school or university can provide help and advice.

Tips for a great résumé

Creating the perfect résumé in high school can be challenging especially when you are trying to balance so many things already such as exams, university applications, a job and a social life. The good news is you may already be ahead of the game. Current Waterloo students who have had summer and co-op jobs offer tips for beefing up your résumé and what to wear to a job interview.

Doing an internship or co-op term?

These are great ways to learn professional skills and get work experiences. To make the most of your opportunity, be sure to ask questions that will help you learn about the industry you're working in. And it's always a good thing to ask for more work when you complete tasks. Employers value students with initiative!

University services

Once you're at university, most schools have services that students (and even graduates) can use to help them with searching or applying for jobs. For example, The University of Waterloo's Centre for Career Action provides résumé-critiquing sessions, mock interviews, and help with planning for your future and more. With services like these, you'll be in a better position to find a great job, be it an internship or part-time summer job.
