You’ve worked hard all year, and your much-deserved summer break is finally here. No doubt you’re excited about all the time you have on your hands, and you may be wondering how to make the most of your summer vacation and also use your time to get ahead.

The long days of summer are the perfect time to catch up on tasks that you put off throughout the school year. Read that new book, work on your resume, or take a certification course. Knocking tasks off your to-do list will keep you busy and give you a sense of accomplishment. Consider doing some research on programs, careers, or classes that interest you (no research paper required!). By exploring your options, you can better prepare an effective plan that will allow you to reach your academic and career goals.

Use your free time to gain experience through a summer job or by volunteering. Many organizations, such as animal shelters, hospitals, and sports leagues, look for student volunteers during the summer. These experiences can give you exposure to careers that interest you and make you more employable in the future. Volunteering is personally rewarding, benefits your community, and shows employers and graduate program supervisors your dedication and ambition.

Summer break is a great time to go out and travel, either locally or internationally. Immersing yourself in a different culture, trying something new, and challenging yourself shows your adaptability. Meeting new people helps build your interpersonal skills and could even result in long-term friendships! Often, you don’t have to travel far to get outside of your comfort zone.

You’ve had a long school year, so you deserve a break. Don’t forget to take some time this summer to just kick up your feet and relax!
