Summer is the time for kicking back, relaxing, having fun with friends and most importantly, enjoying the awesome weather! But it’s also a great time to do a lot of the things you don’t have time for during school.

When you’re not working at your summer job, or kicking back with friends, try to find the time for some self improvement this summer! It will help you accomplish your future goals, and career aspirations!

  1. 1. Volunteer

Use the summers while you're still in school to volunteer! During school it can be hard to find the time to volunteer, and once you graduate and begin working, it's even harder to find the time.

There are many ways in which you can volunteer and give back to your community! Find a volunteer role for something you’re interested in – whether it’s helping the environment, helping people less fortunate than yourself, assisting the elderly or planning charitable events! Racking up the volunteer hours looks great on your resume and can play a big part in helping you win a scholarship!

  2. 2. Exercise

If you’ve experienced first year of university or college, you know that the freshman 15 is no lie. Between busy schedules and eating poorly, it can be hard to maintain good health during the school months. That’s why it’s a great idea to start a regular exercise routine in the summer when you have a bit more free time and less stress!

Having a regular workout regimen will do you wonders when you start your next semester. It will help you alleviate stress, keep you more grounded and help to improve your overall health and wellbeing.

  3. 3. Take an online course

If you love learning, try taking an online course during the summer to gain new skills! It can be something related to what you’re studying in school or can be just for fun! Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to code, be a photographer, or be a better chef – an online course is a great way to learn any of these skills and are usually very cheap!

    Try Udemy, Coursera, or Lynda!

  4. 4. Learn a language

If learning a new skill or subject isn’t what you’re into – maybe you’d like to learn a new language over the summer! You probably won’t be completely fluent after 3 months, but at least it’s a step in the right direction! Being able to speak more than one language is a big plus when it comes to looking for work!

  5. 5. Create something

Let your inner creativity flourish and create something cool this summer! Take a stab at creating some of your own art, a blog or maybe even a cool piece of furniture for your student dorm or apartment. You might find a new hobby you really enjoy, or at the very least, you’ll have something you created all on your own to show off to your friends!

  6. 6. Go on a spontaneous adventure

Summer is absolutely the time for spontaneous adventures. Grab a couple friends and take a day-trip to somewhere new! You’d be surprised at some of the amazing things you can see and find that are right in your area. Or, if you have the budget for it, go somewhere a bit further! There are always cheap summer flights and travel deals to be found. Get out of your comfort zone and experience something new!

  7. 7. Unplug for a bit

You’re probably sitting there thinking, “Excuse me? What? No freaking way.” But seriously, hear us out for a second! Take just one full day to not look at your phone, watch TV or go on your computer. Instead, get outside, hangout with friends, read a book – whatever it may be! You’ll find yourself feeling refreshed by the end of the day.

  8. 8. Read a good non-fiction book

Successful business leaders read an average of 60 books a year. Whether you like to read or not, we highly recommend you take the time to visit your local library or bookstore and pick up a book that will help you expand your knowledge. Choose whatever topic you like, but try to stay away from fiction!

Don’t let summer pass you by without spending a bit of time on yourself! You’re worth investing your time in, and it will pay-off down the road.

We hope you have an amazing summer!
