First Year Dos and Don'ts

Emma, a University of Regina student, shares a few dos and don'ts to help you navigate first year.

Have you just graduated high school, and you're starting your university career this fall? Being a freshman again can be intimidating. You're at a new school, quite possibly in a new place. Trying to navigate through your freshman year can be stressful, so here are some hints!

University campuses are always busy with events and activities. With so much going on, organization is key! A tip for organizing your time: get an agenda or calendar. This will help you stay on top of your readings and assignments in your classes. Don't procrastinate. Deadlines are there for a reason. If you find it tough to stay on top of things, try taking a reduced course load. If you get a bad grade, don't be discouraged! University is very different from high school, and learning is a process.

Being away from home is fun and exciting. It can also be tough being apart from your family and friends. Don't forget to call your parents and supporters! They're your biggest support system. Give them a call and let them know what's going on with you and see how they're doing. If you're feeling overwhelmed, upset, or just need to talk to somebody, reach out to your university student supports. For example, the University of Regina offers the Student Success Centre, Counselling Services, and more. Your university wants you to succeed, so utilize everything they offer.

Living on campus, especially for your first year, will give you the complete experience! On-campus housing helps you get involved and meet so many new people! The people you meet in University become life-long friends, so don't stick to your dorm room! Being on campus can keep you busy, but there is a whole world out there! Make sure you explore it, even if you just start with your city.
