Student Spaces on Capilano University's North Vancouver Campus

All the great places CapU has to offer students on-campus, from resource centres to lounges.

When you're a university student, you end up spending a lot of time on campus studying. Some students enjoy studying in the library or cafeteria; however, if you prefer to study in a less busy environment, a student lounge is a great option for you.

Student lounges are also a great place to socialize, so read on to find out more about the student lounges at Capilano University's main North Vancouver Campus.

Women's Resource Centre

The Women's Resource Centre is in Birch Building, room BR310. It's a student lounge for self-identifying women to hang out, eat lunch, do homework, access resources, have a power nap, or meet some new friends!

This women-only lounge is a safe and comfortable space for our students, offering free menstrual products, safer sex supplies, and comfortable seating. There's also a microwave, refrigerator, kettle, and complimentary tea. The space is accessed using your CapCard.

Queer Resource Centre

The Queer Resource Centre is located in Birch Building, room BR313. Self-identifying members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community are welcome to use the space to hang out, study, get resources, or meet some new friends.

Computer access, coffee and tea, safer sex supplies, free menstrual products, microwave, fridge, events calendar, and a queer-themed library are among the resources available in the space.

The room access code is available by visiting the member services desk in Library Building, room LB195, email, or send a direct message to @capstudentunion on Instagram.

Black Students' Union

The Black Students' Union was recently established to support Black flourishing, inclusive excellence, mutuality, and accountability. The space is in the library, across from the student affairs office; find it in the Library Building, room LB115.

CapU is striving to build more inclusive learning locations, and as part of that work, we're taking a thoughtful and deliberate approach to consider anti-Black racism and how fostering Black inclusion can be adopted and implemented meaningfully in the university's operations and everyday interactions.

The Kéxwusm-áyakn Centre

The Kéxwusm-áyakn Centre is located in the Library Building, room LB196, and is open Monday to Friday. It was named after an elder from the Squamish Nation and it translates to "a gathering place."

This beautiful, newly-renovated space is dedicated to supporting Indigenous students at CapU. It's equipped with computers, a kitchen, tables, and plenty of couches, with soup lunches from Monday to Thursday, and free printing for Indigenous students. Cultural workshops are also held a couple times a month.

We have an Elder-in-Residence program where Elders come to campus to culturally and spiritually support Indigenous students through interactive workshops and one-on-one mentoring.

Faculty from the Math Learning Centre, Writing Centre, and Library provide free drop-in math, writing, and library research support for Indigenous students in the Kéxwusm-áyakn Centre during the Fall and Spring terms four days a week. Kéxwusm-áyakn Centre will also host bi-weekly movie nights in the near future.

CSU Library Lounge

The CSU Library Lounge is located on the first floor of the library. It's equipped with a number of resources, including:

• the community cupboard
• the community closet
• a charging station
• the device doctor
• safe sex supplies
• CSU health and dental plan information
• a free menstrual product dispenser
• a personal lockable mini fridge
• a kitchenette.

The space is often used to host events, such as dog therapy, massage therapy, Halloween costume contests, karaoke, and much more!

The Library Lounge is one of the most popular student lounges due to its easy-to-find and accessible location. It is furnished with plenty of couches and even has a foosball table!

CSU Maple Lounge

The CSU Maple Lounge is located in the Maple Building on the north side of Campus. It's one of the largest student lounges on our main campus. The lounge boasts a pool table, cozy seating, and a kitchen area equipped with a sink, microwave, and water cooler. It also features spacious tables and board games, making it a multi-functional space for both studying and socializing. Occasionally, events are also hosted in the CSU Maple Lounge.

The Cedar Lounge

The Cedar Lounge is a favourite for our business students. It's located in the Cedar Building, room CE344. It has some desktop computers available for student use, a TV monitor, couches, desks, and a whiteboard.

It's a hidden gem and a great place to study. Given that it's surrounded by offices, it's a quiet study space, so please be mindful and respectful of others while using the space! It's open Monday to Friday when the third floor of Cedar is open, closing at 4 pm on Fridays.
