Cape Breton University to Build New On-Campus Residence

Cape Breton University will build a new on-campus residence. CBU has elected Joneljim Construction as the development partner of a new on-campus residence that will be built by early 2025. The decision for a three-level 12-unit building was made based on the needs of and feedback from students for convenience and flexibility with living on campus, and was the result of a recently issued Request for Proposals for on-campus housing.

“We continue to invest in our campus and are working diligently with our community to create ideal learning and living environments for students,” said David C. Dingwall, President. “This project with Joneljim Construction will enhance our apartment-style residence offerings to students who are looking for flexible accommodation options that suit their needs and their budgets.”

The new residence will have 12 units, and will be apartment style with a minimum of 24 beds, so unlike the dormitory style residences, will not require a meal-plan to adhere to insurance guidelines.

“We know the student demographic wants the ability to cook their own meals and live safely and comfortably in apartment style housing,” says Doug Connors Director of Housing and Ancillary Services and Chair of CBU’s Housing Taskforce. “This project will allow more students the option to live on campus and prioritize their studies and student experience.”

Other updates to CBU residences

CBU’s residences currently have a 15% vacancy rate, most of which is in dorm-style housing. Despite that vacancy the University knows that various housing styles and options are important to serve the needs of all students.

CBU has also recently invested $1.4 million dollars in the MacDonald Residence, adding 112 beds and creating a new style of accommodation (dorm rooms with communal kitchens) based on feedback from students.

CBU remains committed to being innovative and leveraging non-traditional space options off campus and maximizing existing space on campus.
