Nipissing University and SpacesShared Partner to Expand Affordable Housing Options for Students
SpacesShared connect students who are seeking safe and affordable housing with older adult hosts interested in homesharing.
Nipissing University is teaming up with SpacesShared, an innovative online homesharing platform, to create new affordable housing options for students.
SpacesShared matches compatible students and hosts
SpacesShared uses a sophisticated matching algorithm and team of support staff to connect students who are seeking safe and affordable housing, with older adult hosts interested in homesharing. The service will be available to Nipissing University students seeking off-campus housing in North Bay.
“We’re proud to be working with SpacesShared to offer a community-minded solution to the housing challenges faced by students that aligns with the University’s commitment to building meaningful connections with the community,” said Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President and Vice-Chancellor, Nipissing University. “The homesharing model offers unique opportunities for students and hosts to learn from one another, eases financial burdens, and contributes to a strong sense of community and connection across generations.”
Benefits for both students and hosts
In addition to expanding safe and affordable housing opportunities for students, SpacesShared offers many benefits to older adult hosts including extra income, help around the house, and an opportunity to give back.
“Students need safe, affordable places to live and older adults are often seeking companionship and connection as they age in their homes,” said Rylan Kinnon, CEO of SpacesShared. “Canadians are experiencing inflation and an increase in loneliness — SpacesShared helps older adults find a way to address the demand for affordable accommodations while also helping the next generation achieve their dreams and goals.”
SpacesShared verifies the identities of students and hosts and requires all participants to pass a criminal background check before entering into a homesharing arrangement. The platform is entirely self-contained from application, to agreement, rent and relationship management.
“We know that opening your home up to a stranger can be hard — but if we’ve done our job right, your guests won’t feel like strangers for long. We created SpacesShared so you can make a connection for life," said Kinnon. "If you’re interested in homesharing, curious, or think it could be a good fit for you, we suggest you try it out. We think you will really enjoy it."
Nipissing joins a growing number of post-secondary institutions that have launched successful partnerships with SpacesShared in recent months, including Wilfrid Laurier University, Georgian, Humber, Lambton, and Sheridan Colleges.
