Humber Hawks Take Flight with Top National Athletics Program Recognition

Humber Athletics was also recently inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame.

The Humber Hawks are soaring as evidenced by a pair of prestigious recognitions that highlight the strength of the Humber Athletics programs.

To celebrate 50 years of excellence in collegiate athletics, the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) honoured its top teams with banner presentations during the 50th Anniversary gala at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Humber Athletics was honoured as the top collegiate program in the CCAA over the last half-century based on the cumulative achievements of the varsity programs in each CCAA sport from 1974 through 2024.

The CCAA committee ranked the top-10 institutions in 11 sports since 1974 in its "Supremacy" series and Humber was recognized in ten sports — including three first-overall selections in men's soccer, men's basketball, and golf.

“Being recognized as the top athletics program over the past 50 years by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association speaks to the legacy of the student athletes, coaches and administrators who have all played a significant role in this award,” said Humber Athletic Director Ray Chateau. “This is a proud day for the Humber Hawks and Humber’s outstanding tradition of high achievement in both sports and academics.”

Certain Hawks teams have greatly contributed to record number of titles

The Hawks have won 67 national titles over the last 33 years. Since 2006, Humber has won at least one CCAA title, a streak spanning 18 consecutive seasons. In 2023, the Hawks captured a program record of eight CCAA gold medals, eclipsing the school record of six from 2016.

In men’s and women’s golf, the Hawks have won a whopping 27 CCAA National Titles (this includes team and individual titles) while the men’s soccer program has won nine CCAA National Titles. The men’s basketball program has seven national championships while women’s basketball has two.

Humber inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame

Also, this year Humber Athletics has been inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame (ESHF). The Humber Athletics biography on the ESHF website highlighted that Humber captured its first Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial title — a gold medal in women’s curling — back in 1969. Humber has since won more than 330 provincial medals, which is the most in the province, and 67 national championships.

Humber graduates have gone on to play professionally or represent their country in basketball, volleyball, golf, curling, badminton and more. As well, Humber has produced a national-best 141 CCAA Academic All-Canadian selections.

Former Humber Athletic Director Doug Fox was inducted into the ESHF in 2013.
