Financial Support for Women in Tech at Algonquin College

As a woman interested in a STEM-related program (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), some new financial aid opportunities have opened up for you at Algonquin College offered by We Saved You a Seat.

We Saved You a Seat is a project at Algonquin College to establish a diverse learning environment where all our learners can succeed. Our goal is to actively recruit women in STEM programs, create programs where women feel real belonging, and attract more women to non-traditional careers. One way we plan to help women in STEM is with these financial aid options:

Hydro Ottawa Award

Value: $2,500

Hydro Ottawa Limited is a regulated electricity local distribution company operating in the City of Ottawa and the Village of Casselman. As the third-largest municipally-owned electrical utility in Ontario, Hydro Ottawa Limited maintains one of the safest, most reliable and cost-effective electricity distribution systems in the province, serving approximately 335,000 residential and commercial customers across 1,116 square kilometres.

The Hydro Ottawa Award is given to one full-time level one female in the Powerline Technician program and the Electrical Engineering Technician program in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence who has received their offer of acceptance. Candidates will be invited to provide a brief written or video submission describing how this award will help them achieve their goals, and how they contribute to the well-being of their community. Each recipient will receive $2,500 for the first semester of the program.

The John Tattersall Bursary for Women in STEM

To celebrate John Tattersall and his impact on Algonquin College, the John Tattersall Bursary was created in his honour, to help champion women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). After a six-year career with the College, during two stints, the Executive Director of Facilities Management retired in August 2021.

John joined Algonquin College in 2011 after a successful 36-year military career where he rose to the rank of Colonel, including command tours at home and abroad. Even if he didn’t attend the College as a student, John considered himself an alumnus since he learned everyday he came to work. In his work overseas, John witnessed how imperative education is to empowering a population as it is a key component to establishing equality in society.

Awarded to female students in any STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program who can demonstrate financial need.
