Canadian College and University Students: Understanding Skills for Success
Discover the habits and routines that'll set you up for success in school.
By: Kayhla Parsard
As summer comes to an end and students prepare to resume their September studies, there are steps to take to help set yourself up for success. Each semester provides an opportunity to create new habits and routines that will help you to achieve their academic goals.
Work-life balance
One thing that is important to keep in mind is to create a routine for work-life balance. Finding the right balance between your class obligations and your personal life will help to bolster your mental health. One good strategy to incorporate is a form of movement into your daily routine. For example, going for a walk after an afternoon class or visiting the Humber gym for a workout.
Library or book study rooms
Another thing to keep in mind when trying to set yourself up for success is your work environment. For quiet workspaces, a good option is to visit the library or book a study room online. And don’t forget, groups are also able to book study rooms, making it easy to come together to work on projects.
Organization and time management
When transitioning back into the fall term after a summer break, it’s helpful to stay organized and manage your time effectively. This can ensure you feel less overwhelmed as the term progresses, and you’re assigned more tasks. Having a calendar or day planner with all upcoming due dates, classes, study sessions, and other priorities is a great way to make sure you stay on top of your studies.
Networking
Lastly, check out networking opportunities offered at Humber. This is a good way to meet people in a similar field and share ideas and tips to further each other's success. Building a sense of community that you can turn to for support is an important element of the Humber experience, and networking can also help you during your studies and even help propel your career after you graduate as you enter the workforce.
