Why Study Communications at Capilano University: A Student's POV

CapU's student ambassador, Jasper Chu, shares how pursuing a Bachelor of Communication Studies Degree at Capilano University (CapU) can prepare students for careers ranging from non-profits and public policy to public relations and marketing.

Applied and theoretical learning

CapU uses a combined applied-theoretical curriculum for its Bachelor of Communications Studies Degree. First-year courses include an introduction to social science approaches and applied skills such as public speaking, business, and popular media writing.

"My work-integrated learning through CapU was fundamental to my career success," says Teresa Grant, a graduate of Capilano University's Bachelor of Communication Studies program. "Both my [practicum] placements demanded operating effectively in ambiguity and limited direction."

Supportive and invested community

Now working as part of Tesla's education fund, Grant says her success is thanks to CapU's supportive faculty and student community. "Being able to pursue 'moon-shot' projects and navigate failure with supportive instructors and classmates instilled a professional resiliency I still carry today."

Sue Dritmanis, an instructor in the program, praised Grant's ability to apply herself in classes and now her career, saying, "Her career pathway is inspiring because it began as a practicum in her degree. We are enormously proud of her and excited to see what her future holds."

Another CapU School of Communication faculty member, Grace Kim, says that as long as a student is willing to think critically but act respectfully, "It is okay to not know what you are doing, and it is also okay to not be okay."

For Kim, "this position of privilege and power, where I can create opportunities and help students be critical, foster curiosity for learning and growth, and even just spread happiness — I think that is an exceptionally powerful responsibility."
