York University's New School of Medicine

York University has long been a leader in health education and research. Now, the University is preparing to train the next generation of primary care physicians — future doctors who will trained to leverage the most recent digital health technologies and to work collaboratively within inter-professional health care teams.

A first-of-a-kind School of Medicine

Set to open in 2028, the York University School of Medicine will make a significant impact on medical education in Canada, a country where nearly six million people are without a family doctor (CBC). The School will focus on preparing graduates to serve as family physicians and other primary care specialists, helping to ensure health care reaches the communities that need it most.

A commitment to educational access and equity

The School of Medicine is an extension of York University's commitment to positive change. Along with its leadership role in advancing cross-disciplinary health programming and research, the University is committed to providing educational opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds.

By focusing on community-centered health care training, York aims to train future doctors who mirror the populations they will ultimately serve. To enhance access and the diversity of students in health fields, the University also intends to develop a two-year pathway to medicine and nursing through an interprofessional degree program.

As this exciting project unfolds, the new School of Medicine presents a promising opportunity for future medical professionals dedicated to making a meaningful impact in health care. The journey towards the future of primary care is underway!
