Become a Master of Financial Risk Management (With an MFRM)

Money makes the world go 'round, so if you want to master the global economy in, say, ten intensive months, what should you do?

Calculated risk

The University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management offers a ten-month Master of Financial Risk Management, which combines the fields of risk management and high finance and prepares you for a compelling career on Wall Street, Bay Street — any street you like, really.

Who is the Master of Financial Risk Management for?

The Rotman Master of Financial Risk Management (MFRM) is a focused degree designed for quantitatively-strong students eager to hone their skills for the innovation-focused economy.

Basically, if you've got a head for numbers, and the world of finance interests you, you're probably a good fit for the MFRM.

MFRM class profile

Check out this partial class profile to see how you stack up:

Undergraduate background:

  • Business and commerce: 55%
  • Math: 26%
  • Engineering: 5%
  • Accounting: 5%
  • Economics: 5%
  • Computer science: 3%

As you can see, if you've got some business, math, or economics experience, you'll be in good company!

Academics:

The average undergrad GPA for an MFRM student is 3.6 on a 4.0 scale — that's about 80% or so in percentage terms.

Many applicants also choose to sit the GMAT or GRE, which are standardized tests for graduate school. The average score is 717, but neither the GMAT nor the GRE are required for admission to the MFRM!

Work experience:

About 53% of the MFRM class has some work experience prior to pursing their MFRM, and 26% are working towards a professional designation, like a Chartered Financial Accountant or Financial Risk Manager. No experience? No problem! You'll have plenty of time to sharpen your skills as you work towards your degree.

MFRM: A risk worth taking

Rotman's Master of Financial Risk Management program boasts an 88% employment rate six months after graduation, meaning you could start in September, graduate in June, and be working in risk management by January!

Not a bad way to kick off your professional career — especially when you consider that people with a master's degree tend to earn more money than those with just a bachelor degree. Not to mention that Rotman is ranked #1 in Canada and #4 in North America for Masters in Finance — meaning you can be sure your degree will be respected around the world.
