Ready, Set, Go!
How to prepare for a new adventure in university.
Embarking upon your first year of university can feel overwhelming, but with the right preparation and support, you can make a smooth transition to your post-secondary studies. Here are some tips to help you gear up for first year.
Visit and tour your new campus ahead of time
One of the best ways to start your university journey is by participating in orientation programs. The majority of these programs will take place in person over the summer, and allow you to meet other new incoming students, tour your new campus to help familiarize yourself with where your classes are, and where different buildings and student spaces are located. If you’re an incoming Brock student, you’ll want to register for Smart Start!
If you’re not able to attend an orientation program before September, the next best thing you can do is visit your future campus for a tour. A campus tour will help you adapt more quickly to your new surroundings at university, and you’ll gain a better understanding of where your classes will take place, and how long it will take to get from point A to B. Many schools offer faculty-specific tours as well, so be on the lookout for those if you want an even more in-depth glimpse into where you’ll be spending time as a student.
Learn about the services and opportunities available to you
Orientation and getting used to a new city, campus, and program doesn’t come to an end as the fall begins — there will be plenty of new things for you to discover throughout the year! Once you’ve settled into your new life on campus, it’s also important to take note of the different supports and services available to all students.
From skills workshops to future career resources, drop-in academic support, tutoring services, and more, be sure to take advantage of any support that’s being offered. Many of these services are provided by students, for students at Brock, in addition to full-time staff members. These services are available to you not only during your first year, but throughout your entire university career. Take advantage of the resources and opportunities at your disposal, and you'll be well-prepared for a successful and enriching first year at Brock!
