It's a great option if you need to improve your English proficiency to meet the admission requirements for a Mount Royal credit program or if you want to advance your career.

About the program

Mount Royal's LEAP program is taught by experienced Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certified instructors. Using a university-model of delivery, you'll learn from multiple teachers in different classes throughout the week. Courses focus on a range of English language skills as they are used in academic studies, including:

• speaking
• reading
• listening
• writing
• grammar
• fluency
• pronunciation

There are four levels of LEAP, beginning with a low intermediate level and progressing through to an advanced level. The level of LEAP you start at depends on your English level at the time of entering the program and is determined by a placement test.

Each level of LEAP is completed over a 13-week term. How much time you spend in the program is determined by the level you begin at. For example, if you start at LEAP 1 then it will take you 15 months (four 13-week terms) to complete the program.

Once you successfully complete the highest level, LEAP 4, you will meet MRU's English Language Proficiency Requirement for degree, diploma and certificate programs. This means you can smoothly transition into a credit program feeling confident and ready for what's ahead!

Student life at Mount Royal

Mount Royal campus has a small-town feel in a large city, offering you the best of both worlds. With an average LEAP class size of 20 students, you can get to know your instructors and your classmates in a welcoming and engaging learning environment.
