Getting Involved in Summer Activities, On- and Off-Campus
From sports to clubs, there's lots to love about summer, whether you're on-campus or at home!
Whether you are on a semester break for the summer, or you're taking courses between the spring and fall terms, finding ways to get involved throughout the summer is a great way for college students to explore different activities on and off campus. Here are three ways you can make a social impact this summer.
1: Make a bucket-list of summer activities
Getting to spend time outside, in the great outdoors, is something almost everyone looks forward to. With just over 90 days of summer (92 to be exact!), the possibilities of fun outdoor activities are endless. Mapping out exactly what you'd like to do in advance will help to keep you on track. As a student, finding activities that are both fun and low cost may seem hard to come by.
Looking through guides and tours provided by your college is a great way to start. At Humber you can take a self-guided discovery walk through the Humber Arboretuem. This enjoyable walk leads you past flowerbeds, to woods of environmental significance, and along the West Humber River, a route once taken by Indigenous peoples.
2: Try out for a sports team
Depending on your local municipality and age group you can find different sports teams, and sports activities to sign up for throughout the summer. Many colleges also offer recreational sports to provide students with team building skills and physical activity. If you are a student who enjoys being involved on a varsity team, then trying out for the fall season is something to keep an eye out for mid to end of summer. The men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and badminton teams at Humber College have dominated the courts this year, taking home provincial and national championships. 3: Become a camp counsellor
If you are a student who enjoys working with children and thrives in an outdoor work environment, then becoming a camp counsellor may be the perfect fit for you! There are many options to become an overnight camp counsellor or a day camp counsellor. The Nature Camp at the Humber Arboretum offers a variety of summer employment opportunities available every year for enthusiastic individuals who are excited about nature and working with young people.
The Ontario Camps Association has granted the camps accreditation. Weekly themes guide camp activities, which are supported all year long by a staff of nature educators. For more information on how you can apply visit the Humber Arboretum Camp Jobs.
