While school is the main focus for most students, graduation and your first job out of school are always in the back of your mind. Even if your focus is on coursework, getting job experience while you're a student can help give you a leg up when your time in the classroom is complete. So how do you do that?

Co-op program
If a co-op is available to you, take advantage of the work term. If you haven't chosen a school yet but experience is important, look into programs that offer co-ops. These are typically semester or year-long work experience periods that let students get a feel for full-time work while developing job skills. Plus, they count towards your credits!

Work on campus
Check out your school's career centre and your academic departments for work opportunities on campus during the school year. In Ontario, students eligible for OSAP can also apply for Work-Study positions to help make money during the school year while working on campus. Getting a job on campus can be great for students as your employer is aware of the importance of your education, and you can make connections at your institution. It's also convenient to get to work before and after class!

Working off campus
Working off campus is another great way to help save for school while getting some experience. Check out your school's job board for off-campus opportunities, as well as other job boards and business websites. Don't forget to network with friends and family to see if there is an opening available for which you might be well-suited. Even if your job isn't directly related to your field of study, there are lots of great skills to be leaned - working with others, leadership, and time management, to name a few.
