Enter the Hammer Bent Truss, the king of vaulted roof construction. The Hammer Bent is a true puzzle which must be constructed and raised as one complete truss. It must be accurate in all component fabrications or the joinery will not fit tight and will sag. For this reason it is necessary to have a solid background in wood working or have taken the Timber Post and Beam course.
The project framework measures 20’ x 30’ with a vaulted ceiling 25’ high. Douglas fir 8”x10” and 6”x10” timbers are triple joined for strength. All intersecting posts are through tenoned, wedged, housed, shouldered, mitred and pegged. Kneebraces are double shouldered, tenoned, and mitred. Learn how to control distorted, poorly milled timbers using a virtual, corrected layout method and twelve ink lines! Students will divide into three groups, each building a Hammer Bent Truss and the Connecting Girts and Purlins. Full size lofting, jigs, templates and modular construction. |
