Description:

As part of the Medical Sciences Graduate Program, in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, you can obtain an MSc or PhD degree in Medical Genetics.

We provide an excellent training program in a range of areas including cancer, developmental genetics, gene discovery, and molecular diagnostics using several different model systems and focused on several different genetic diseases including ocular diseases, muscular dystrophy, obesity, neural development, childhood cancers, skeletal defects and learning disorders. Several different model systems are used to approach different questions including primary and cell culture, mice and Drosophila.

Students undertake independent research programs in conjunction with formal course work in relevant topics and department seminars. Emphasis is placed on the students training not only in lab-work on their specific research project of interest but also to be able to critically analyze scientific information and become an effective communicator.

The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.2 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last ★60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

Applicants are normally required to have completed a master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.

An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.
