The Department of Chemistry offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy, both requiring course work and thesis research. In addition to the four traditional areas of analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, the Department also offers special PhD programs in chemical biology and chemical physics. The Department provides an outstanding research environment. More than 220 graduate students, plus postdoctoral fellows and research associates, are engaged in various research programs. The Department is among the best equipped and best funded in the nation and has a faculty renowned for their excellence in teaching and research. |

At minimum, applicants require an appropriate previous degree or its academic equivalent from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on the most recent two years of full-time study.

During the application process, you will be required to provide the following information:
- Transcripts: one official copy from each post-secondary institution you have attended - Statement of purpose/intent: (1 to 3 pages in length) that describes your interests and goals in chemistry. - Up to date CV/resume - The names of three (3) U of A Chemistry faculty members whose area of research are of interest to you. - Letters of reference - We require three (3) letters of reference to support your application for graduate admission. They should be written by persons who are familiar with your Chemistry background and who are providing support for your application. You will be required to list the names and email addresses of the referees. They will receive an automatic email instructing them how to submit their letter of reference online.
