The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in a number of fields in the general areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical finance, mathematical physics, statistics, and biostatistics. The Department also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics for applicants who wish to take a recognized package of courses with a view to increasing their mastery of an accreditation in Statistics. Prospective graduate students should consult the Graduate Chair with regard to facilities available and the background required for the field in which they are particularly interested.

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school. To be admitted to the PhD program a student typically must hold an MSc degree in Mathematical or Statistical Sciences from the University of the Alberta (or an equivalent degree from a recognized institution). For some programs also, holders of an MSc in other areas like e.g. Computing Sciences or Physics will be considered. Applicants must also have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 in the last two years (*60) of relevant work at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. |
