Based in Vancouver, BC, Canada, MDes is a two-year, full-time, research-oriented, interdisciplinary degree for creative professionals at the forefront of design. As a graduate, you will be poised to take leadership roles across a diverse range of established and emerging professions.

ReThink by drawing upon your knowledge and experience to push the boundaries and purposes of design by integrating design research methodologies within theoretical and experimental frameworks.

ReNew your design practice by engaging in independent and collaborative advanced-level research, studio practice, prototyping, co-creation methods, and critical studies, to develop a rigorous critical framework synthesizing research, theory, and practice.

ReDesign your own research and approach within a range of established and emerging fields including: Health Design, Recreation Design, Soft Product Design, Communication Design, Product Design, Industrial Design, Sustainable Design, and Service Systems Design.

Prerequisites:

    Individuals holding a four-year Bachelor's degree in Design, Media Arts, Visual Arts, or related fields from an accredited college or university, and who have achieved an overall grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher are eligible to apply. All candidates for admission must apply for a specific stream: Design, Media Arts or Visual Arts.
    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 230] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 84] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 70] or Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages: Certificate of Proficiency in English [min. C] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5]

    Applicants are evaluated by the Admissions Committee on the basis of a visual portfolio, combined with academic records, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of intent.
