During the first clinical year, the trainee will perform supervised clinical consultations at the Alberta Children's Hospital in-patient, out-patient, and emergency department services. The trainee will develop skills in the gastroenterological and nutritional care of patients. The trainee will develop expertise in performing upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, gastrointestinal biopsies, motility studies, esophageal pH studies, breath hydrogen analysis, and liver biopsy. The trainee will participate and contribute to the pediatric gastroenterology academic half-day and the GI pathophysiology course, and will begin to develop a research program to be carried out during the second and third yearof training.
During the second and third year of fellowship, the trainee will continue to attend out-patient GI clinics. One month of elective rotations are available in nutrition/metabolism, gastrointestinal pathology, radiology, and surgery. Trainees focusing on a clinical pediatric gastroenterology traineeship will continue their clinical experience as described in the first year but at a more advanced level. |
