Description:

With more than eighty faculty and one hundred and fifty students, we are the largest graduate program in health-related research in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Our program is interdepartmental and provides students with the opportunity to become competent investigators in a wide variety of health-related research areas. We are ideally positioned for preparing students for future careers in biomedical and translational research. The Medical Sciences Graduate Program provides opportunities for multidisciplinary graduate education in the Health Sciences within several areas relevant to human health.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    Applicants are required to have a 4-year Bachelor’s degree at the time of entry into the MD/PhD Program with a minimum GPA of 3.8/4.0 in the final two years and an overall GPA of at least 3.0/4.0.
    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 237] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 92] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 580] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7]
    • Medical College Admission Test
    Application Notes : Candidates must complete the MCAT and the CASPer on-line evaluation tool. Minimum MCAT criteria includes a score of 127 or greater on the Critical Analysis and Reasoning section (2015 MCAT and later) or a verbal reasoning score of 10 or greater on the pre-2015 MCAT. Applicants whose native language is not English will be required to submit an official copy of their TOEFL score, or other evidence of competency in English is required. A minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 92 (580 on the paper-based TOEFL test or 237 on the computer-based TOEFL test) is needed for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Students taking the IELTS are required to achieve a minimum score of 7 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each category. Equivalent scores on other recognized tests may also be considered. Each of these scores are only valid for 2 years. Students who have completed an Academic ESL program through Canadian academic institutions may petition to have this considered in lieu of TOEFL. Applicants may be exempted from this requirement if they have completed a university degree at which English is the language of instruction.

    Applicants are required to submit a CV, two academic references (referees should address suitability for an MD/PhD program; one reference must be from the supervisor from an undergraduate research project or thesis), and a separate statement submitted by the applicant regarding their suitability, motivation, and career plans in MD/PhD studies.
