Description:

SSU is committed to educating and equipping students to be informed world citizens. For more than two decades SSU students have travelled and studied abroad in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. This international experience is foundational to SSU’s International Studies program which will introduce you to political, social, environmental and economic perspectives from across the world. If you’re interested in learning about other cultures, globalization and its impacts, opportunities and challenges of different models of international development, and your own role as a global citizen, this program will challenge you in the best ways possible.

During the program, you will participate in two travel terms (one in Asia and one in Europe) with your whole class. These travel experiences, along with your IS classes in St. Stephen, will provide insight into such issues as poverty, population growth, disease, human migration, climate change, war, gender inequality, community dynamics, pop culture, world religions, mass communications, strategic development, water issues, cultural heritage and human rights.

Prerequisites:

Grade for Entrance Previous Year (%)*70
These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
  •  Grade12 English
When we accept students to St. Stephen’s University, we look for possibilities and motivation beyond your transcript. Our standard acceptance criterion is a 70% combined average of your university-prep Grade 12 courses. However, if your average is below this level, we will give you a chance to demonstrate to us why your experience at SSU might be more academically successful than your high school marks might suggest. This can be demonstrated in one or more of the following ways: a reference from a teacher or academic source that would attest to the reasonable hope for your ability to complete a degree; a written explanation by you for why high school grades are low (e.g. family circumstances or behavioural issues), and why there would be a good expectation for academic success at SSU; or a statement describing a relevant learning disability including a copy of a valid assessment or plans to obtain one.
Test Scores:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 550] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 86]
Application Notes : International students whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English by scoring 550 on a paper based TOEFL, 86 on an internet based TOEFL or 6.5 on an IELTS exam. Alternate language proficiency testing may be accepted based on demonstrated equivalency. Admissions staff on rare occasions may waive testing based on clearly demonstrated English fluency in the application process and an oral interview.
