Our PhD Program is designed primarily to prepare students for careers in advanced research and university teaching. It offers specialized research resources in the fields of Political Theory and Methodology, Canadian Government and Politics, Comparative Government and Politics, International Relations, and Public Policy, Public Administration, Local Governance and Administration.

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school. In addition to the minimum admission requirements (see Graduate General Regulations), a completed political science MA is required, normally with a minimum 3.67 GPA. Any background deficiencies must be met by completing appropriate courses in addition to normal PhD work.

Application Notes : | English is the language of instruction and communication at SFU. Accordingly, an applicant whose primary language is not English must demonstrate command of English sufficient to pursue graduate studies in the chosen field.
International applicants whose primary language is not English will not be required to complete an English-language test if they have completed a degree at an institution where the language of instruction and examination was in English in a country where English is the primary language.

The minimum graduate program admission requirements for test scores:
Internet-based TOEFL: 93 with minimum of 20 in each section Paper-based TOEFL: 580 and TWE 5.0 IELTS (academic): overall band score of 7.0 on the academic (NOT general) test with a minimum of 6.5 in each section.
