Description:

The School of Information Studies, located in the Faculty of Arts, offers a graduate program leading to the degree of Master of Information Studies (MIS). This program is open to graduates in all disciplines, and is offered on a full-time and part-time basis. The program is governed by the general regulations of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS). Students complete 7 compulsory core courses in their first year of study plus a capstone experience course in their final semester. The master's program offers three options to complete the 48 credits required for the MIS degree. The three options include a course-based option, a thesis option, and a co-op option. Graduates of the MIS program are prepared to take on many exciting career opportunities as controlled vocabulary specialists, digital curators, information architects, knowledge management analysts, library directors, metadata managers, privacy analysts, records managers and web content managers, to name just a few.

    Applicants must have a 4-year honour Bachelors Degree or the equivalent, with a B average, demonstrated competence in French and English, and Computer literacy.

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 580] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 92-93]
    Application Notes : Applicants whose first language is neither English or French, need to demonstrate their proficiency in both English and French: B in comprehension on Federal Government language exam and F7/E7 on OLBI exam also acceptable.     Two recommendation letters, a letter of intent, writing sample in French or English (minimum 800 words) and transcripts from all previous universities attended are required. A meeting with the Director of the School of Information Studies may be requested.. Telephone interviews may be arranged if required.

    Admission to the co-operative program and assignment of placements is the responsibility of the coop office. Admission is on a competitive basis. The conditions to be met are as follows: be registered full-time students in the course-based option; have maintained a B average in their master’s courses; have completed the first session of the master’s program; be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
