Description:

Computer Science studies the computational structures and processes that appear throughout the natural and human worlds. The study of those processes (known as algorithms) can lend insight into the functioning of our brains, the structure of our genes, the mechanisms by which people form communities, and many other questions in a wide range of disciplines. At the same time, an understanding of algorithms and the structure of data can help us create a tremendous variety of useful software tools. Carleton’s computer science curriculum is designed to provide students with a balance between theoretical study and the practical application of theory to the design and construction of software.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Applicants should have at least: three or more years of English (with a stress on writing); two years of algebra and a year of geometry; two years of social science; and one year of a laboratory science. Most Carleton students go well beyond this minimum. The admissions committee is usually attracted to candidates who do honors or advanced placement work, when available. We also expect students to take two or more years of a foreign or classical language, unless it is not offered at their school. Students who take more courses in the subjects listed above are generally stronger candidates. But we may offer admission to an applicant of unusual ability and interest who has not taken all these courses. When we do, it is on the basis of his or her school record, scores on standardized tests, and recommendations of school officials.
    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 100] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 250] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 600] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7.0]
