Description:

Designed originally by distinguished theatre historians Michael Booth and Alan Hughes, our Theatre History program provides students with a rare opportunity to study the theatrical past within a practically-oriented, fully functioning contemporary theatre complex.

Students create their programs in close consultation with faculty, choosing from among a wide range of areas of study. Current faculty specialties include: finance and economics, acting, ancient Greek theatre, 19th- and 20th-century commercial theatre, opera history, theatre criticism, dance history and theory, and Modernism. Students may also study the history of design, directing, dramatic literature, and production. Theatre History students will research and prepare a scholarly paper suitable for presentation at a sanctioned academic conference. Projects with a theoretical orientation are encouraged, but other types of research within theatre history and drama are also possible.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Applicants must possess either a general knowledge of Western theatre history, from the Greeks to the present, or a strong background in dramatic literature and a familiarity with the practicalities of theatre production, design, direction, and performance. Normally, all admissions are conditional upon a diagnostic examination in theatre history.
Application Notes : Applicants are invited to submit supplementary material of their work that they feel may enhance their application, including: digital recording of acting scene, lesson plan for a workshop in applied theatre areas, stage manager's prompt script, photographs of sewing projects, a directorial concept for a play they have either directed or would like to direct, and writing samples.
