The Ph.D. is a research degree requiring few courses and an extensive thesis, conducted under the supervision of a Faculty member (professor), that makes a distinct contribution to knowledge. The Ph.D. program prepares candidates for a career in teaching, research and/or development and graduates are expected to have acquired autonomy in conducting research. McGill also offers various workshops that provide general, transitional, and professional skills development opportunities, preparing candidates for various career options following the Ph.D.

Application Notes : | Applicants to graduate studies whose mother tongue is not English, and who have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized foreign institution where English is the language of instruction or from a recognized Canadian institution (anglophone or francophone), must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 90 on the Internet-based test (iBT), with each component score not less than 20, prior to admission. |
Additional Admission Requirements: | Admission requires a master's degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university. Students in the Department's M.Eng. (Thesis) program may petition to transfer to the Ph.D. program after one year without submitting the master’s thesis following a formal “fast-track” procedure. At their request, applicants (without a master's degree) with exceptionally high Academic Standing and outstanding research potential will be considered for direct admission to the Ph.D. program.
Admission to graduate studies requires a minimum CGPA of 3.0/4.0 (or equivalent) for the complete bachelor's program, or a minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0 (or equivalent) in the last two years of full-time studies in an undergraduate program. |
